DVD
FAQ:
What is DVD?
DVD is the newest standard for 5" optical media. While
common usage suggests that DVD stands for "Digital Versatile
Disc" or "Digital Video Disc", in fact the quasi-acronym
was selected without definition and means..."DVD".
It is the next generation in the family of laser disc, VHS tape,
audio CD and CD-ROM. DVD provides expanded storage and higher
quality due to support for a variable bit data rate which takes
advantage of a large buffer memory.
What
is a DVD's storage capacity?
The DVD has the capability of storing data on two layers per
side. The layers are separated by a microscopic space which
allows the laser to read either layer. The capacity of a single
layer DVD is 4.7 gigabytes. A double layer DVD (DVD9) stores
double that. That translates into 9 hours of music or 133
minutes of high quality full motion MPEG-2 video per single
layer. Recording on both sides of a DVD with double layers
results in a maximum capacity of 17GB of data!
How do I create a label for my DVD?
You have several options. You can create the artwork for your
label on a computer using desktop publishing software. SPA
will create the film necessary to silk-screen or offset print
the disc surface. If you need help with the design, ask your
Account Representative. Our graphics department is talented
and experienced. We have provided a template
and film specifications to assist
in your design process.
How do I provide
SPA with a disc image?
SPA accepts a pre-mastered DVD image of an acceptable industry
book standard DVD on a DLT CompacTape III, III XT, or IV with
capacity up to 15 GB (uncompressed). One tape required per
data layer with each tape clearly labeled for DVD type (DVD
5, DVD 9) layer number (0, 1) and parallel/opposite track
method. Please include a list of known defects approved for
production, program time, chapter start times and menu access
points. Taps should be ANSI labeled, blocked in largest blocks
possible, and contain the following information in this sequence:
Beginning
of tape
DDPID
- Disc Description Protocol file (DDP v2.0)
CONTROL.DAT
- lead in control data
MAIN.DAT -
program data
End of Tape
SPA will also accept a DVD-R
(media does not support CSS encryption). Other input considerations
may require a service charge.
Do NOT supply SPA with the only
copy of your source media.
