International Textbook Publisher
The nature of textbook publishing indicates that there are two
peak ordering/shipping seasons. The clients internal shipping
staff handles off peak demand adequately, but the biannual peaks
call for extraordinary staffing and co-ordination.
S.P.A., Inc. designed and assembled an automated conveyor system
capable of inserting cards, applying labels and applying high
speed shrink wrap, critical needs of the client. The system
was justified by identifying additional clients with similar
needs. By servicing multiple clients a capital investment that
is unjustified by one clients needs now benefits many.
A new product line required low volume, quick turn book printing.
The professor was to be given the opportunity to select from
250 “cases” in order to build a customized textbook. Order quantities
mirror class sizes, ranging from 10 to 100 copies of a custom
text.
In a competitive selling environment it is important that the
product is cost effective to produce while having the appearance
of a high quality text.
Using variable printing technology and custom program designed
to eliminate human intervention, S.P.A., Inc. developers designed
a user interface that allows the client to enter an order directly
into the system. All custom characteristics were defined in
order entry, including table of contents and index.
Each book is paginated automatically, queued for printing and
produced without intervention, minimizing cost and turnaround.
Order to ship time is about three days. Covers are handled by
using preprinted shells with a variable imprint for the Title/Author.
The texts are perfect bound, making them indistinguishable from
more traditional texts printed in large quantities. |
