Production was handled in house by a small team of packers.
Print quantities were based on “life of product” expectations
and warehoused until shipped or outdated. As a result, there
was an excessive amount of capital committed to inventory. Unpredictable
rates of obsolescence added to the overall inventory risk.
S.P.A., Inc. analyzed production practices and over 2,000 inventory
components and suggested Just-In-Time manufacturing of most
documents. Using a combination of high speed Xerox digital technology
and traditional offset, S.P.A., Inc. reduced inventory levels
dramatically. Print runs are now based on monthly usage expectations,
limiting inventory risk. Quick turn on manuals and other components
resulted in higher inventory turns and reduced waste.
All component storage was removed from the clients office environment,
freeing up much needed space for their development team. Moving
the inventory closer to production and material handling equipment
reduced turn times and expensive overhead.
A wide area network (WAN) was installed to allow for instant
transmission of shipping data to a dedicated assembly team,
which builds the shipment on the spot in a pick & pack arrangement.
Financial analysis indicates annual savings approaching 35%
with the revised manufacturing operation. |
